( all things considered, it's a pretty beautiful evening. clear and warm, with just enough of a breeze that it's refreshing. sheena sits on a bench in the plaza, looks down at her hands, and feels cold. it's just apprehension, she thinks — get over it, sheena! — but she hadn't gotten far at all from the palace before needing to sit, her whole body feeling heavy with new knowledge and a new task. of course, she hadn't hesitated before agreeing; hadn't blinked or lowered her chin. maybe that's why it's hitting her now.
there's another world, with another chosen, and she's going to go there and kill them, because she agreed to, just a few minutes ago. she doesn't regret that. she doesn't. but… it's not wrong to need to sit down and process it, right? it's a lot to take in. what will this world be like? what will this chosen be like…? no — right there, she can't even let that thought take root. she knows better.
she takes in a deep breath and lets it out in a sigh, her chest and shoulders rising and falling in the movement. pull it together, sheena! )
[It's no coincidence that he's taking his nightly walk this way. As the Chosen One, he hears everything that's going down along these lines. So of course he knows her mission. She might not realize he does, but he does.
And he knows what must be going through her mind right now. The Sheena who caused so much suffering from an accident and still can't live with herself... There was no way she'd be able to kill one person to save others. It has him concerned, whether he admits it or not.
So that's why he waited for her to exit and for a few minutes to pass before following her, now walking up from in front with his hands confidently at his hips and a usual smirk plastered onto his face.]
( her whole body tenses, not dramatically; a stiffness that creeps over her as she takes in another breath. it's like thinking of chosen summoned him. she wrenches her gaze from her hands, looking up at zelos directly, and if she overcompensates a little, raises her chin too high and squares her shoulders too much — nothing to see here, move on — at least she isn't entirely aware of how hard she's trying to look the part.
he doesn't open with anything bad, so she relaxes an inch and gives it to him it as leeway. )
I'm not down, ( …even so, she's not all that inclined to talk to him about it, even with leeway. ) I'm …busy working. ( it takes a second of hesitation to pick the word. 'working.' right. it's a job. that's all it is. don't make it anything bigger. and besides, she doubts (hopes) he won't take much of an interest if she throws around things like 'official business.' )
Don't give me that, Sheena. It's written all over your face!
[He closes the distance enough that it's a more personal conversation, but he doesn't sit down next to her. That would be too much, when he's intruding like this. There's a 90% chance he's going to say something stupid enough to upset her and make her leave, so what would be the point anyway?
And in all honestly, he's not comfortable enough to sit.]
It's your mission to Sylvarant, isn't it? [Anything from a glance over (or complete indifference) to him or outright surprise is met with him raising a hand to stop her, speaking first.] You're not surprised I know about it, are you? I'm the Chosen One, remember?
( she is surprised, thank you very much, and it shows in the way her eyes widen and the way she's about to protest; she clamps down her objection when he explains. it's obvious in retrospect, maybe, but — she bites down that objection too. why shouldn't he know? he always seems to know everything… but… ) They said it was top-secret!
( …she blurts out anyway, retrospect and all, flushing in embarrassment.
so, he knows too, huh? her second thought is that it's almost a comfort, she almost wants it to be a comfort. someone else who knows, someone she can talk to about this, besides corrine, who she probably won't be able to talk to about any of this until tomorrow. right now that feels very far away. but it's zelos, and confiding in him… like he'd take it seriously. he'd just laugh. the idea shrivels and dies. with him standing over her like this, she feels hemmed and small. )
… Fine, fine, of course you know all about it. ( grudgingly, trying to cover up her outburst, trying to pretend she hadn't been taken by obvious surprise. ) It's still just work. I'm not upset!
You're not sure if you can take one life to save others.
[He states it casually, and that's probably the most annoying part. As if he's disregarding Sheena's other words, and like this isn't important. Of course, it only seems that way. He cares. Of course he cares. That's why he's here, after all.
But it's better if she doesn't pick up on that.
The point is she's worried and stressing out about it, and he wants to reinforce that it's not wrong to think like that. That she shouldn't do anything she regrets. He's just not sure how to go about that himself... So here he is, probably spurring it on.
But in the end, he's positive Sheena will sort things out. She doesn't really need him. She just needs a gentle nudge.]
Haha, well you're right! There's no way you're going to be able to do it.
